Writing Poetry

Poetry is like a tiger
With its striped and massive paws,
With its strength and with its hunger
And its sharp and tearing claws.

You can try to think of words
To say what tigers mean to you
But the words become elusive
And the tiger’s in the zoo.

You could write about a monsoon
Or a tramcar in the street
But it’s hard to find profundity
In subjects so effete.

If you want to be a poet
Find a tutor good and true
And a group that’s sympathetic.
Who will soon inspire you.
